The Taipei Chungshan Hall was designated as a national historical site by Ministry of Interior in 1992.  It was built in 1936.  Originally, the construction project of Taipei City Hall was meant to memorize the ascending to the throne of Japanese emperor Hirohito.  The major architect of this project was Ide Kaoru of the Taiwan Governor Office.  The function of Taipei City Hall was for public gatherings or cultural activities.

In 1945, after Taiwan¡¦s retrocession, the Taipei City Hall was renamed the Chungshan Hall and administered by Taipei City government.  Since then the Chungshan Hall has been the main venue to welcome many important foreign guests, including the formal US President Nixon, the formal Korea President Lee Chen-wine, and the formal Vietnam President Wu Tien Yeng.  It has been the site for signing treaties and inauguration ceremony, such as the Sino-Us Taiwan Mutural Defense, and the inauguration of the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th President and Vice-President of ROC.
