![]() ACLCLPACLCLP, formerly known as ROCLING, was founded in Taiwan in 1990. Its existence was preceded by an ad hoc committee that inaugurated the first computational linguistics conference in Taiwan, ROCLING I, in 1988. ACLCLP now has over 200 members, including over 50 life members and more than 10 institutional members. This is a healthy representation among Taiwan's medium population size of about 21 million. In addition to hosting annual ROCLING conferences and quarterly workshops/lectures, ACLCLP is also experienced in organizing international conferences and hosting international scholars, including a good number of ICCL members. Our last international conference was ROCLING X, the international conference held in August 1997 to celebrate our tenth anniversary. There were over 200 participants in the conference, including over 50 overseas participants who presented over 20 papers, accounting for more than half of all the paper presentations. There are also usually between 10 to 20 international participants in our annual conference, including invited speakers. Other international computational conferences that we did or will host including PACFoCol-94 (later merged with PACLIC, the regional conference that rotates among Japan, Korea, Hong Kong, Singapore, and Taiwan) and PACLIC-13 in 1999. Two international conferences that we will co-sponsor with other international societies in the near future are ICSLP-98 and IRAL-98. We will also co-sponsor the 2001 LSA (Pacific Rim) Linguistic Institute at UC Santa Barbara. ACLCLP/ROCLING is also one of the most important conduits for sharing Chinese NLP resources. The sharable resources that can be obtained from ACLCLP include the 5 million word tagged Sinica Corpus, the 80,000 strong CKIP lexicon, the 20 million character untagged News Corpus, and a spoken Mandarin corpus conforming to the COCOSDA format. We have also recently completed a proposal for a Chinese NLP segmentation Standard to be used in Taiwan. Useful sharable resources which will accompany the segmentation standard include 1) a reference lexicon attested for its versatility, 2) a reference corpus of 2 million correctly segmented words, 3) and lists of affixes. ACLCLP also publishes a journal, Computational Linguistics and Chinese Language Processing, as well as many working papers. ACLCLP is financially healthy. It now has a reserve of about US$120,000. In addition to the non-paying positions of the president, the executive secretary, and the board of directors, it has a full time paid secretary. Yearly operational costs are easily covered (with a small yearly surplus) by the income from dues, subscriptions to the journal, purchase of the publications, and donations.
